Kriegslok Plates

I have a small collection of these, and have encountered others in museums, displays and sales. Where I have photographed them, I show them below. You can obviously see more on the cabside photos on the main site.
Today these plates appear occasionally on Ebay, but be warned, the postage is high!

From my own collection unless otherwise stated. Note that as time went on, real plates were lost, stolen or sold, and many 52.80s ended their days with blank plates, on which was stencilled a number, or with the number truly on the cabside.
Probably genuine, to judge from the damage to the face and the multiple holes. I may have been redrilled when a tender was changed. This example was purchased at Stassfurt as recently as 2003 for euro 75.
Advertised and purchased as a replica, this plate is composed of the correct digits, mounted on a wooden backing. With only 6 characters, it looks much smaller than the 8 character plates with check digits. Purchased in late 2003.
A classic example of a painted number, carried by a 52 which is still operational. These plates were made up in the latter days of steam. perhaps to allow the loco to travel to and from heating duties. This loco was operative at Bw Engelsdorf as late as 1991. 52 8039> This example was purchased from a preservation group in Germany during 2003.
A well restored example of a computerised number from a Pasewalk based loco which was withdrawn in the early 70s. This example was purchased at the Heizhausfest in Chemnitz in August 2001.
A replica plate purchased in this condition, the number does not seem to have been carried by a genuine BR52, but have been cast for some special event. This example was purchased at the museum in hermeskeil in the summer of 1993.
Another probable reporduction, this plate was cast for the loco when it was sold by DR to the Bayerische Eisenbahn Museum at Nordlingen. This example was purchased at the Deutsche Dampf Museeum in Neumarkt during 1991
One of many surplus plates, the Gattung plate indicated route availability. This example is from the DFK at Crailsheim in 2003.
Given the confusion over Schichau works numbers, and the general absence of worskplates on BR 52s, this obvious replica purports to have come from 52 xxxxx.
Purchased from the DDM at Neunmarkt in 1993.
The locomotive is now at ÖGEG Amplfwang in Austria, and this aluminiuj numberplate was possibly made at that time. It was purchased late 2005.

Some of these plates are on display at the Wolstyn depot in 2001 amongst a large display of wall mounted railwayana. Others are from my own collection.

It seemed quite easy to purchase the PKP Eagle plate and some type plates, these being offered by drivers on the steam trains for hard currency. However I suspect that the quantities available indicated a small craft industry.
On the other hand, these relatively unrestored plates seem to have a degree of authenticity. In my own collection, I have left some them like this.
